The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rule restricting federal funding for certain gender-affirming care services for young people has taken effect. While not all care is affected, these changes may create uncertainty and confusion for youth and their families navigating care through Medi-Cal.

As of October 13, the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) will be able to reimburse Medi-Cal patients for puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgery for trans youth under 18.

Many services remain covered through Medi-Cal, such as doctor visits, speech therapy, lab tests, mental and behavioral health care, and care for problems from past surgeries.

Additionally, California is taking steps to protect access to care through state-funded programs designed to help cover costs and strengthen the network of providers delivering these services.

Providers and families with questions should contact HCAI at genderaffirmingcare@hcai.ca.gov.
Every wave of progress brings us closer to a futur Every wave of progress brings us closer to a future where our communities are heard, protected, and able to thrive. However, election results are a starting point for continued advocacy, not the finish line.

Now is the time to keep that momentum going. We must continue organizing, advocating, showing up for one another, and holding elected officials and decision-makers accountable to the communities they serve.

The wave has started, but the work is far from over. 🏳️‍⚧️ ⚧️ 🏳️‍🌈
