Network Response to Governor Newsom’s Veto of SB 418
Governor Newsom has vetoed SB 418 – In response, the California LGBTQ Health and Human Services Network Director, Dannie Ceseña, issued the following statement:
“It is with profound disappointment that we acknowledge the Governor’s veto of SB 418. This decision is a significant setback, but it does not diminish the immense effort of everyone who called the Governor’s office, engaged their elected officials, and advocated tirelessly.
As someone who remembers the perilous days of the black market hormone trade, I cannot stand by and watch our gender-diverse siblings be forced back into harmful, unregulated practices being pushed by the federal administration, by potentially banning gender affirming care for our youth, and possibly all adults.
SB 418 was a crucial step forward. It would have strengthened anti-discrimination protections based on gender identity and secured a vital 6-12 month supply of hormone replacement therapy. This was not just a win for the TGI community; it was a safeguard for all Californians needing HRT, including cisgender folks going through perimenopause, cancer treatments, or IVF.
This veto is a setback, but it does not erase the power and progress we’ve built together. Our community showed incredible unity and delivered a powerful, well-crafted bill that made it all the way to the Governor’s desk, with overwhelming support in both the Senate and the Assembly. That is no small feat, and it matters. Take a moment for yourselves. Drink water, eat a good meal, take that walk, and practice self-care.
My deepest gratitude goes to the Solis Policy Institute at the Women’s Foundation CA, Planned Parenthood, EQCA, Trans Family Support Services, Gender Justice LA, the LGBTQ Caucus, and especially Senator Menjivar for their unparalleled support, guidance, and unwavering advocacy.
The fight is not over. We will not stop until gender-affirming care is fully protected and accessible for every Californian.”
In Solidarity,
Dannie Ceseña
